The bulk of calligraphic works from medieval China that have survived to present times consist mainly of stone inscriptions and their ink rubbings, with handwritten specimens on paper occupying only a small portion. After the Dunhuang documents were discovered, the world of Chinese calligraphy was provided with an immense cache of first-hand materials, much of which has yet to be examined by scholars. The importance of these documents for the study of Chinese calligraphy lies in the fact that they have revealed the wider context of handwriting within which calligraphic works were created, and thus contain information crucial to academic evaluation of ancient character writing styles. By comparing philological data and handwriting specimens, this paper aims at outlining the value of the Dunhuang documents to the medieval period of calligraphic history, widening the scope of calligraphic studies. |
