摘要 | This article is an exposition of Hsiung Shih-li's theory of causation. Hsiung is an original contemporary Chinese thinker who has attempted to synthesize Confucianism with Buddhism. In his theory of causation first he gives his exposition of the 'wei-shih' (consciousness-only) theory of the four causes, i.e.,'yin yuan',or cause proper; 'teng wu-chien yuan',or the predominating condition. Then he gives his criticisms of this theory. According to him the 'wei-shih' theory of causation is indefensible. Finally he gives his own view of causation. In basic agreement with the Confucian tradition he asserts that only the principle of creativity can fulfil all the conditions of the four causes. Therefore it is the only true cause in a metaphysical sense. |
