摘要This essay points out the limitations of purely extraspective, objective research for examining the nature of subjective phenomena, particularly consciousness itself, and argues that first-person investigation of consciousness is optimally based upon a prior refinement of attentional stability and vividness, as practiced by Buddhist contemplatives. The cultivation of mindfulness and introspection in this tradition is discussed in relation to various Buddhist techniques for training of the attention. The stages of attentional development up to the accomplishment of "samatha",or meditative quiescence, are then explained,as are the purported state- and trait-effects of this discipline. Such training may form the basis of a "contemplative science" that could well complement cognitive scientific research into the nature of consciousness.
