摘要During the past several decades, there have been many comparative studies of Japanese Zen Buddhism and Western thought. The present article asks:why can Zen,which is a redeveloped form of Chinese Chan Buddhism,be possibly compared with the philosophy of Whitehead? The discussion argues that the Chinese philosophy of the Yi Jing (or The Book of Changes) presents an original ground that allows the Process God and Buddha in Chan/Zen to share a fundamental affinity.
The purpose served by this approach is to alert that the above comparative study requires a critical rethinking of Whitehead,Chinese Chan Buddhism and modern Japanese Zen in the light of the Yi Jing tradition.
Hence,it reaches such a conclusion:without a careful look into the root impact of the Chinese philosophical yi tradition,an attempt at finding a link between Chan/Zen and the concept of God would be misleading.
