The discussion of the present paper centres around the frontispieces of fascicles seven and nine respectively of two Tangut blockprints of the Sutra of Golden Light which the Palace Museum keeps for the Peiping Library. First, on the basis of the information given in the preface and the colophon, it is established with which editions we are dealing here. Secondly, the meaning and contents of the frontispieces is elucidated step by step with reference to the headings of the picture and the text of the scripture proper. Finally, the value of the illustrations is analyzed in terms of artistic skill and the development of Buddhist book illustrations. Three features stand out：the depiction is realistic and captures what is essential; the arrangement is novel and rich in special effects; as frontispieces the illustrations which depict the contents of the scripture are rare and precious.
