Despite the remarkable achievements of the studies on Buddhist art, nevertheless, there seems a relative lack of systematic discussion and research on the terminology “The Bodhisattva over the Left (Right) Side” (左 (右) 廂菩薩) . Given the gap in studies on this terminology, by analyzing some relevant literature, this research aims to explicate the origin, the development of this terminology, and some related question, like the superiority of the bodhisattva over the left side.
