摘要
삼론종에서 깨달음은 중도의 실상에 대한 궁극적 체득이다. 삼론종에서 깨달음을 궁극적이고 완전한 것이라 보면서도 실질적으로는 여러 단계의 가르침을 설정하여 이를통해 중생을 교화한다. 본 논문에서는 삼론종의 단계적 가르침과 궁극적 깨달음의 관계를 살펴보기 위해, 초장(初章)과 중가(中假), 그리고 삼중이제(三重二諦)의 각 단계에서 깨달음에 접근하는 방식을 고찰하였다. 초장은 중가 이전의 입문적이고 개괄적인 가르침으로, 입문자들은 초장을 접하고 나서 현상에 대한 의심을 생성하게 된다. 하지만 이 의심은 특정한 방향성이 없이 거친 집착들을 제거하기 쉽도록 흔들어놓기만 한다는 점에서 깨달음과는 거리가 있다. 반면, 특정 대상의 상황에 맞게 적확한 가르침을 펼치는 중가의 단계에서는 집착의 뿌리를 송두리째 뽑아냄으로서 진정한 깨달음에 이를 수 있게 한다. 중가의 대표적인 가르침인 삼중이제의 각 단계들은 한 대상을 점진적으로 제도하기도 하고, 여러 근기를 동시에 교화시키기도 한다. 삼중이제의 점진적인 단계들은 교화대상이 집착으로 인해 깨닫지 못하고 미혹된 것에서 비롯된 현상적인 결과일 뿐, 각 단계는 모두 궁극적 진리를 나타내고 있다. 한편, 삼중이제의 각 단계는 여러 근기의 중생을 함께 대치하여 그들 모두를 깨달음으로 이끄는 방편이기도 하다. 이 때 세 가지 층위의 가르침은 설법하는 근기에 따라 차별화된 것이지, 어느 한 가르침이 다른 한 가르침보다 높은 것은 아니다. 이처럼 삼중이제의 각 단계는 교화대상을 궁극적 깨달음으로 인도한다는 점에서 공통된다. 삼론교학에서 여러 다양한 형태의 교설 가운데 일부는 점진적 단계로 설정되어 있다. 그러나 각각의 단계적 가르침 자체는 깨달음의 불완전한 현현이 아니며, 깨달은 자의 지혜가 중생에게 구현된 것으로서, 모두 궁극적 깨달음을 보증하고 있다.
Enlightenment refers to ultimate acquisition of the reality in Sanlun School. While enlightenment is considered an ultimate state, they developed the multiple stages of teaching and let people guided by the stages in practice. This study mainly focuses on the approches taken to reach enlightenment at Chuzhang and Zhongjia, and the each stage of Threefold Two Truths so that we can explore correlation between the gradual teachings and ultimate enlightenment. Chuzhang is the entry level stage that teaches general ideas ahead of Zhongjia. After being exposed to Chuzhang, people start having doubts. What these doubts do to people’s obsessions is mere shake which will do no more than scatter obsessions into a state where they can easily be removed. At the stage of Zhongjia, however, people are given teachings that suit the specific situations they are facing that will enable people to root out their obsessions and let them achieve ultimate enlightenment. Threefold Two Truths, one of the most renown teaching of Zhongjia, is not only the gradual teaching to a subject but also the teaching that change a number of different fundamental abilities at once. All of these gradual stages show the ultimate truth, but the multiple stages exist due to the lured subjects who failed to be enlightened. Every level of Threefold Two Truths is the Skillful Means targeting each individual and lead him to enlightenment. It should be noted that this classification is only made in accordance with the fundamental abilities of people and among the stages is no hierarchy. All stages in Threefold Two Truths are the same in a way that lead people to ultimate enlightenment. In Sanlun School, each stage of the gradual teachings in itself is not the incomplete manifestation of enlightenment, but the embodiment of the wisdom of the enlightened, guaranteeing ultimate enlightenment.
