Legend has it that the Bodhidharma was originally a Brahma prince, and during the Liu Song Dynasty (Around 470-478 A.D.), came across from India to China to teach Zen Buddhism. Xia Jing Shan was highly respectful of the Bodhidharma's noble actions and ideals in traversing the sea to spread the words of Buddhism, and thus composed the paintings in worship, basing the work on the classical texts. The meanings and ideals of Dharma were also injected into the paintings in order to emphasize the simple yet profound nature of Bodhidharma's Zen Buddhism as well as Xia Jing Shan's spiritual practices. The style of the Bodhidharma series is mainly seen through two major aspects: the formation of the character by following the typical Buddhist painting rituals using Gongbi, while the rich connotations of Zen present the interesting nature of water ink. The paintings fuse Eastern and Western aesthetics, where traditional painting and calligraphic styles are used innovatively to give new meanings. It presents the solemn state where the Bodhidharma has returned to a natural state of being, in which things are simple and without constraints. |
