As Venerable Master Hsing Yun said, “We shall now announce ‘Oneness and Coexistence’ as the theme of this conference, for not only is it in accord with the principles of the Truth but also reflects the times of this era.” In one way, “Oneness and Coexistence” fits with Natural Science (modern synthetic theory of evolution). On another, it embodies the humanistic spirit of Confucianism, Buddhism and Taoism. Consequently, reality and value are unified. Fo Guang Shan promotes the spirit of “Oneness and Coexistence.” On the one hand, it is carrying out the sacred mission of Buddhism to “modernize.” On the other hand, it also promotes the fundamental spirit of Chinese civilization. Thus, we can say that the spirit of “Oneness and Coexistence” advocated by Venerable Master Hsing Yun shows that the concepts of Buddhism are consistent with the mainstream values of society, and provide spiritual support for the cultivation and development of modern society.
