Abstract | 現代社會想像內所呈現的現代性和世俗性背景,並不僅僅包括現代社會個人主義生活方式以及工具理性,如果考慮到歐洲社會和歷史變遷的獨特性,我們可以看到西方社會關於人間福祉與超越性的理解,正反映了基督教變遷的獨特邏輯,而在泰勒所集中探討的這一邏輯的著述當中,我們可以看到佛教,尤其是人間佛教,可以為化解現代西方社會想像的不足,提供佛教方面的思想資源和實踐模式。在這方面,人間佛教既滿足了軸心時代以來宗教的一般性定義,又可以將現代社會想像納進來,以其超越自我和時代性的豐富教義完善現代社會的結構設置。
The modern and secular context presented in modern social imaginaries does not only include individualistic lifestyles and instrumental rationality. Considering the unique characteristics of European society throughout its historical transformation, we can see that human welfare and transcendental understanding in Western society is a reflection of Christianity’s influence. Taylor’s writings were focused on this analysis. Correspondingly, Buddhism, especially Humanistic Buddhism, can provide an ideological and practical model to resolve the limitations of modern Western social imaginaries. In view of this, Humanistic Buddhism not only meets the general definition of religion since the Axial Age, but also incorporates modern social imaginaries, and completes the structural setting of modern society with its rich teachings that transcend self and time. |
