AbstractBujang Valley is an area which covers from the Muda river in the South to the Jerai peak in the North. Since the 2nd Century C.E., the area has been the seat of an ancient port-polity, presently known as the Old Kedah. The presence of this kingdom is recorded in various Indian, Arab and Chinese sources dated between the 2nd to 9th Century C.E. The importance of Old Kedah as an ancient entrepôt is evident from the historical records as well as numerous archaeological discoveries unearthed from the area. The most significant findings are monuments, sculptures, inscriptions, ceramics and beads. Most of these materials were brought in by the ancient traders coming from the Middle east, Indian subcontinent and the far east. Among the most significant discoveries in Bujang Valley are the numerous Stupas, Buddhist sculptures and inscriptions containing Buddhist texts, which proves the presence of ancient Buddhist travellers or pilgrims. This paper attempts to discuss the history of the arrival of Buddhist traders in Old Kedah and their relation with the political and economical environment of the region.
