Care for Leprosy Patients at Losheng Sanatorium by Taiwanese Buddhism Shih Hong-Liang Abstract Hansen’s Disease, also known as Leprosy, has long been a significant health challenge. In December 2018, the author engaged in clinical care services for Hansen’s disease patients at the”Qilian Jingshe” within Losheng Sanatorium. Through this service, the author listened to the patients’ stories, learned about the care provided by Buddhist monks, and understood the hardships involved in establishing the”Qilian Jingshe.” This sparked the author’s motivation to document and organize this historical account. By reviewing the situation of Hansen’s disease patients during the Japanese occupation (1895-1945)and the period when the Nationalist Government took over Taiwan(1945-1966), it becomes evident how crucial the monks’ efforts were in caring for and guiding the patients to transcend their suffering and realize the meaning and value of life through Buddhist teachings. This paper provides a brief introduction to the background of Hansen’s disease(1895-1966), followed by a review of the propagation history of the monks at “Qilian Jingshe.” It seeks to understand how the monks cared for Hansen’s disease patients, guided them in learning Buddhist teachings, and provided end-of-life care from”good life”to”good death.” The care process for Hansen’s disease patients at Losheng Sanatorium by the Buddhist community is divided into three phases based on the service content and its benefits:
1. The Dawn of Life(1938-1978):Elder monks provided material support and compassionate teachings, helping patients transform their lives and regain their dignity and sense of life’s meaning. 2. Life Transformation(1978-present):Master Cheng Yen of Tzu Chi Foundation continued to provide material resources, concentrating severely ill patients in the”Chaoyang House,” offering day and night care. 3. Clinical and End-of-Life Care(2018- present):Resident monks of the Buddhist Hongshi Academy(the author)guided elderly Hansen’s disease patients, providing clinical and end-of-life care. Finally, specific cases are analyzed to highlight the religious benefits that the Buddhist community’s care has provided to Hansen’s disease patients. |
