In Buddhism, "giving" (dāna) is considered a key practice for achieving the merits of a Chakravartin (wheel-turning king) and is given a prominent position in various texts. For instance, the "Madhyama Agama" records that the Buddha achieved the fruits of a Chakravartin through practicing three meritorious deeds, with giving being the foremost. Similarly, in the four means of embracing (catur-samgraha- vastu) and the concept of the six perfections (paramitas), giving is regarded as primary. This study aims to deeply analyze the text "Bodhi Light Tales" to explore how Master Hsing Yun reinterprets giving through "the Four Givings" (giving confidence, joy, hope, and convenience), modernizing its expression. Furthermore, the research will compare the concept of the Four Givings with traditional Buddhist views on giving, thereby revealing its innovative aspects in theory and practice, and its contributions to contemporary society. The paper begins with an introduction that clarifies the research questions and further explores the unique features of "Bodhi Light Tales" explaining why this text is chosen to study Master Hsing Yun's interpretation of giving. To progressively clarify the characteristics of the Four Givings, the second part of the paper explores traditional views on giving, from its origins in India, where the concept of giving evolved from caste-determined duties to a more universally applicable practice. The teachings of Mahayana sutras such as the "Mahaprajnaparamita Sutra,""Mahaprajnaparamita Shastra," "Bodhisattva Precepts Sutra," "Sutra of the Wise and the Fool," and "Abhidharmakosa" are extensively examined to show the Mahayana Bodhisattva path's approach to giving. This will involve organizing relevant sutras in tabular format to present their doctrinal styles, while also analyzing how these texts use everyday life materials to elaborate their teachings, thus illustrating the concrete content of their doctrines. The third part addresses the views on giving encapsulated in the Four Givings. Based on stories from "Xingyun Shuoyu," the core teachings of giving—material giving, giving of the Dharma, and fearless giving—are summarized. This chapter will use these three doctrines to compare and contrast the traditional scriptural teachings on giving with the new interpretations in "Bodhi Light Tales" discussing how the Four Givings reflect the core values of Humanistic Buddhism. The fourth part focuses on the characteristics and values of the Four Givings. It explores how Master Hsing Yun has utilized the concept of the Four Givings—giving confidence, joy, hope and convenience—as a modern expression of giving, demonstrating its innovative aspects in theory and practice, and its potential contributions to contemporary society after comparing with traditional Buddhist views on giving. In the conclusion, the paper ultimately communicates that Master Hsing Yun's perspective on the Four Givings not only deepens the humanistic traits of Buddhism by providing rich experiential evidence but also aligns with the fundamental aims of Buddhis |
