Abstract | The purpose of this research is to analyze the influence of Theravada Buddhism on the art and culture in the Sukhothai Period through the study of the governmental system, the art and culture appearing in historical evidences.
From result of the study, it can be concluded that Buddhism in the Suthothai period had been flourishing due to the Sukhothai kings righteous government based on Buddhism which is the religion for peace and happiness of people.
In addition, through out nearly two hundred years of the Sukhothai Period, the flourishing of Buddhism had been found in the art, tradition and customs. It can be seen from ancient ruins, relics and Buddhist traditions such as the practice of the teachings of the Lord Buddha ; preserving precepts, listening to sermons, practice of meditation and religious support of temple construction and adherence to moral code.
The knowledge acguired from this thesis is the impact of Theravada Buddhism on governmental system, the art and tradition which has become the background of the life at present. This can be seen from the democratic system which is developed from the paternal government of the Sukhothai period. In addition, a lot of Buddhist art created at the present time have their forms from the Sukhothai Styles. Other good traditions can be found some where else. If one can bring the Sukhothai Period into light again, a way of human life will be more happy and peaceful. |
