Abstract | This thesis is aimed to study and analyse the whole content of Economics mentioned in the Tipitaka which is the Teaching of the Buddha in Theravada scope and to compare similarity and difference between economics mentioned in the Tipitaka and the western one, especially the western has influenced to the world economy in the present day, by studying procedure gained from comparison between the two. This study is set up to search for possibilities to apply the Buddhist economics in everyday life of economics activities. The study of the Tipitaka and the other studies related to the Tipitaka. They found that economics problems of human being are caused by human thought and deeds. This is because they lack of true knowledge of body and mind and understanding in human activities, which influence them to do things that causes lots of problems. But in another point of view of Buddhist economics, we accept the idea that human beings have to develop themselves to reach their goal, or solving their problems. This can be done by learning problems their mind environment step by step, which will be able them to solve socio-economic and environmental problems effectively. There are two levels of way of life in Buddhism. First, the normal family life called “home taking” that is controlled by social rules. They have to accept economic system built by society completely. The other one a chaste life is a life which does not follow the normal economic activities – no production, no selling and other activities like these for profit or material wellbeing. We should not think about profit and loss in money terms, but we should emphasize on pure spiritual benefit instead. In comparison to the main western economics, it may be concluded that the suffering of the people about economic problems are similar. But a way to identify the causes of problem are quite different. The western believe that man is rational and self-interest, that are main in their own benefit incentives to operate production, selling, distribution and competition in order to reach the goal material richness. Buddhist way accepts that life needs material necessity for their living. But it is only a basis improve life, which is more valuable than purely things, which is called a quality of life that is not cling on materials and existence. The origin of western economics came from the idea that mankind is the center of the universe. Then, they can do their own activities freely. They think that nature is controlled by them. But the economics mentioned in the Tipitaka came from the voidness of having real own body of thing. This idea came from learning themselves and realization the ultimate reality of life –what it really is So they realize that they are just only a part of nature. Therefore, the ways to operate activities should follow the rules of nature. Ultimately, they should operate their activities in accordance with voidness as well. The economic system mentioned in the Tipitaka is different form the western one absolutely. This is because of the happiness that we gain from offering without wanting to gain something back is the way to develop quality of life in order to reach the highest of living. We are not judge whether we lose or gain profit at all. This is because we think to donate the rest treasure to others is more valuable than we just keep it for ourselves. The Buddhist way is more systematic concerned to the individual, social system and environment as a whole. |
