Since ancient times, death is an inevitable process in life, and no one can escape from it. The longest life in human beings is no more than a hundred years, and after death, everyone must reincarnate according to karma. Those who are reborn in a good way will have more pleasure and opportunities for Buddhist practice. Those who are reborn in a bad way will not only suffer from endless karma, but also lose the capability of engaging in Buddhist practice. Furthermore, this kind of reincarnation in the six realms is eternal and never-ending, so what suffering it is to them!
In Buddhism, there are two approaches to stop reincarnation: Gateway of the Holy Path and Gateway of the Pure Land. However, in the Gateway of the Holy Path, it takes three immeasurable and countless catastrophes to terminate the kalpa. In other words, it takes a long time, is extremely difficult for Buddhist practitioners to do, may easily lose the capability, or may easily fall into evil ways. Therefore, the Buddhist patriarchs all advise new Buddhist practitioners to take the Gateway of the Pure Land. In the Gateway of the Pure Land, they may go directly to Pure Land first, and then go to Bodhi Path until they become the Buddha. This is exactly what Master Ouyi said, “Those who use self-power to break through confusion and transcend life and death are called those who erect the Three Realms where and things are difficult and gradual; those who use the power of Buddha to connect and guide people to the West are called those who cross the Three Realms where things are easy and pausing.”
Therefore, knowing the Gateway of the Pure Land is the shortcut to solve the problem of life and death. However, what is the principle of practice for the Pure Land? This is the research question to be explored in this study. Moreover, there are many classics associated with Pure Land. In order to perform in-depth discussions, this study focuses on the Longer Sukhāvatīvyūha Sūtra, the first scripture of Pure Land. This study is divided into six chapters to analyze the interpretation framework. Chapter 1 describes the study motivation and purposes, previous study results, study methods and scope. Chapter 2 gives an overview of Western Pure Land, Chapters 3, 4, and 5 are the main focuses of this study – this study aims to interpret the principle of rebirth through faith, vow and practice, including the connotation and importance of faith, vow and practice, the difficulty encountered in believing the Pure Land, how to generate faith, the cause of lack of vow and how to make a vow, and the cause of lack of practice and how to engage in practice. Moreover, this study intends to discuss the merits after the initiation of faith, vow and practice. Lastly, Chapter 6 concludes this study.
This study focuses on theoretical analysis and probes into the principle of practice of Western Pure Land in a rational and clear way. Hopefully, this study can present the true meaning of the contemporary Pure Land for the death and provide Pure Land practitioners with a reference for self-reflection and decision-making, which is also the study purpose.
