| Abstract | 天台智者非常重視佛教與外道的區別，在對三藏教的判釋中闡述了佛教相對外道的優越性. 就產生而言，外道起於對因果的錯誤見解，而佛教則是由於佛正觀因緣悟道而產生; 就內容而言，三藏教戒定慧三學詮因緣生滅四諦之理，能引導人們出離生死流轉之苦海，而外道戒定慧雖有邪正之分，但都不能出世離苦; 就修行而言，三藏教有四門入理，佛依悉檀因緣善巧設教，而外道之四門皆無悉檀因緣; 就次位而言，三藏教念對初心成就，既已遠勝六師外道. 智者認為，佛教與外道優劣雖屬天懸地隔，但二者又是可以相互轉化的.
