AbstractIn this article i try to show three things. first, that there is a similarity between the analysis of the self in theravada buddhism and in the philosophy of david hume. second, that there is also a difference in that buddhist analysis is a normative project toward a religious end, while hume's concern is an empirical one toward an epistemological end. third, that buddhism avoids the basic problems that plagued hume in his concept of the self.
