Abstract太虛等人,批判宋明佛教以來之發展,是「山林佛教」「死人佛教」等趨勢. 筆者目前無法斷言宋代佛教是否如此,至少而言,明初佛教即是如此發展. 而提出人稱晚明佛教為復興期,或為新佛教,則所謂的「復興」或「新」,其內涵意指為何?

本文試借晚明佛教四大師之一的憨山,來探究其復興之內涵. 由憨山一生行事風格之轉換,從對己之關懷到對教界,法門,最後及至黎民百姓,社會,而提出憨山修行觀從自了生死,增大為人間菩薩觀的修行. 而言種菩薩為教化眾生,不避刀山火聚的精神,亦是佛教東傳後,中國一直自詡為「大乘佛教」的核心. 可惜這種大乘佛教的悲懷,事行,正是明初佛教以來所失落,而在憨山一生的行事風格中再度開展.
