The Chinese Buddhism seems to appear a revival image in late Ming Dynasty. In terms of the Ch'an School of Late Ming Dynasty, all the Ch'an masters wished to perform some achievements in order to open a new front. In this great time, Ch'an Master Han-yueh Fa-tsang wrote books and established his theory in order to point out new understanding for the revival of Ch'an practice. This paper investigates the formation and characteristics of the Ch'an shills of Hanyueh, examines the background of his insistence on "the objectives of Lin-chi School", and explains how Han-yueh implemented the characteristics of his Ch'an skills──the recognization of the essentials of the five sects──in his training and teaching. The style of San-fon School, which was formed by his successors, was very influential among the Ch'an monasteries of Late Ming and Early Ch'ing Dynasties. The Ch'an skills of Han-yueh occupies an important status in the history of Chinese Ch'an School. It is unnegligible. On the other hand, his outstanding viewpoint of preserving the pureness of the ch'an style of ancient masters, and promoting the examination of the state of realization by means of "the objectives of Lin-chi School" seems to offer us a deeper reflection when we concern about the rise and fall of Ch'an style today.
