| Abstract | 達摩經由海上絲路來華，首站來到廣州，雖然入華時間在史籍中有多種說法，但是達摩是歷史上真實的人物，經由海航來到中國，傳法而成為中國禪宗的初祖，達摩來華及其傳播禪宗傳承的事件，具備了佛教史上重大的價值與時代意義。然而，諸多文獻典籍對於達摩入華時間，卻有多種不同的說法，本文考證文獻的各項資料內容，推證其入華的可能年代與行跡，以及討論菩提達摩與梁武帝對話形式的演變過程。
雖然，近代諸多學者，多半引用北魏楊衒之《洛陽伽藍記》與唐道宣法師《續高僧傳》，以為達摩來華年代的依據。然而，高麗藏本與大正藏本的《續高僧傳》，卻有兩字關鍵字詞的不同，本文依此而展開討論。此外，針對「宋境南越」一詞實際的指涉，是否真為「時代加上空間」之描述，筆者在本文中另有不同的看法及推論。
梁武帝與達摩的晤談，不僅是禪宗初祖與皇帝論禪的公案，也象徵禪宗正式傳入中國，這在歷史上具有深刻的時代意義。梁武帝與達摩晤談或相關的歷史紀錄，最重要的有兩項：其一，梁武帝與達摩討論有無功德的公案；其二，達摩圓寂後，以梁武帝署名撰述之〈達摩碑文〉。本文針對梁武帝與達摩對話的各項典籍，一一加以梳理，亦是本文討論的重點。
Bodhidharma traveled to China via the maritime Silk Road, and arrived in today’s Guangzhou. Though there are many different versions of historical accounts regarding the exact time of his arrival, Bodhidharma was no doubt a historical figure, who, arriving in ancient China through the sea route, became the First Patriarch of the Chinese Ch’an School of Buddhism. Bodhidharma’s arrival in China and the stories of his efforts to spread and transmit ch’an teaching have considerable value and significant meaning in the history of Buddhism. However, there have been different historical accounts regarding the exact time of his arrival in China throughout various Buddhist literary sources. This article investigates the content of available information in the literature, and tries to confirm and verify the possible year of his arrival and the likely itinerary of his travel in China, and discuss the evolutionary process of the form of conversation between Bodhidharma and Emperor Wu of the Liang dynasty.
Most scholars cite from A Record of Buddhist Monasteries in Luoyang ( Luoyang-qielan-ji《洛陽伽藍記》) composed by Yang Hsuanchih in the Northern Wei and the Supplement to the Biographies of Eminent Monks (Xu-gaoseng-zhuan《續高僧傳》) composed by Tao Hsuan in the Tang dynasty, as the source of evidence to prove the year of Bodhisharma’s arrival in China, but there seem to be a difference between two key words in the Supplement to the Biographies of
Eminent Monks included in the Gaoli Tripitaka and Taisho Tripitaka. This article carried out this discussion on the basis of this point. In addition, regarding the actual reference of the expression, “Nanyue in the territory of Liu Song of the Southern Dynasties”, and whether it is a description of “the era in addition to the time”. The author of this article has proposed a different view and argument.
More than a gong’an to explore the meaning of Ch’an, the conversation of Emperor Wu and Bodhidharma also signified the formal starting point of the spread of Ch’an Buddhism into China, marking a significant historical moment in history. There are two main historical accounts related to the interview between Emperor Wu and Bodhidharma: the gong’an in which Emperor Wu and Bodhidharma discussed the essence of gongde (merit or virtue), and Bodhidharma’s Epitaph composed in the name of Emperor Wu after Bodhidharma’s passing. This article reviewed and analyzed the Buddhist texts in relation to their conversation, as a key point of discussion. |
