Abstract書法是中國最重要的文化寶藏,歷經甲骨文、金文、石鼓文、小篆、漢隸和章草,魏晉南北朝的楷書、行書轉變和發展,傳至唐代,此時篆、隸、楷、行、草五體兼備。而佛教自東漢傳入,逐漸興盛與其影響,更將中國書法藝術推向空前的高峰。
「碑」可以述德、銘功、紀事,是古代的記錄載體,也是考古、史料的珍貴資料來源,更是書法與雕刻藝術的完美結合。而現在提到碑石書法,首先聯想到的為「魏碑」,然而唐代遺留的碑石數量之多,不遜於魏晉南北朝,且許多為當代名家之作,所以唐代碑石書法應可與魏碑一較高下,這些碑石中又與佛教多有關聯,故本文以唐代為研究範圍,了解當時書法家所書寫佛教相關碑石的書風、字體、趨勢等現象。
本文共分為五章,第一章緒論,說明研究動機、目的、範圍、方法與限制。第二章文獻探討,針對唐代的書學特色、書法家及相關的歷史背景,進行整理與探討。第三章佛教書法的形式,分別就寫經、摩崖石刻、造像題記、佛寺碑記等不同的形式與載體進行探究。第四章唐代佛教寫碑,說明寫碑的緣由與目的,並就唐代書法家及其佛教寫碑之作進行研究。第五章結論,就前述各章節作一總結。

Calligraphy is the most precious treasure of Chinese culture. Its history, with a variety of forms, ranges from oracle bone script, bronze script, inscriptions on drum-shaped stone blocks, small seal script (a.k.a. Qin script), clerical script and cursive clerical script (or termed draft script in English) of the Han Dynasty, regular script (or text script) and semi-cursive script (or running script) of the Six Dynasties (during the periods of Three Kingdoms, Jin Dynasty, Southern and Northern Dynasties), then to transforming into five scripts: seal, clerical, regular (text), semi-cursive (running), cursive, which simultaneously exist in the Tang Dynasty. While Buddhism had spread to China since the Eastern Han, this imported religion gradually became prosperous and influentially promoted Chinese calligraphy to an all-time peak.
"Steles" were a medium used to elaborate virtues, imprint merits and record events in ancient times. Today, they are the cherished historical materials and the important sources of data for archaeology. Steles can be seen as ideal combinations of calligraphy and sculpture as arts. When speaking of stele writing nowadays, with the form typified by "inscriptions incised on stone slabs of the Northern Dynasty" is first associated; nevertheless, the great amount of stele writings handed down from the Tang Dynasty are not inferior to the Six Dynasties, and many of them are the works by famous calligraphers at that time. In addition, stele writings of the Tang Dynasty are mainly related to Buddhism. In this regard, inquiring works of the Tang Dynasty will hence be taken as case studies in my research, so as to comprehend the style, script, tendency and other appearances of the Buddhism-related stele writings on then.
My research is concentrated on this thesis, which is composed of five chapters. First Chapter is the introduction, in order to explain motivation, purpose, scope, method and limit; Second Chapter is the discussion of documents, to sort out and talk about calligraphic characteristics of the Tang Dynasty, its calligraphers and historical background; Third Chapter is the types and mediums of Buddhist calligraphy, to respectively investigate sutra writings, cliff inscriptions, script craved on the statues, tablet penmanship at the temples; Forth Chapter is Buddhist stelae of the Tang Dynasty, to describe the subject, cause and purpose of characters being written and incised on stones, and to survey the related works by calligraphers of the Tang Dynasty; Fifth Chapter is the conclusion, to provide a summary of contents mentioned in the previous chapters.
