This thesis is a study of the Boshan Chan Jingyu (Boshan’s Chan
Exhortations) which contains the Chan huatou instructions of the late Ming dynasty Chan Master Wuyi Yuanlai (1575-1630). The primary goal of this thesis is to gain an understanding of the Chan instructions on huatou practice as it is explicated in this text. From these details on Wuyi Yuanlai’s teaching style and that of the text will be brought forth.
This thesis is divided into three main chapter sections of content. Firstly, an introduction to Wuyi Yuanlai and the Chan Jingyu has been provided in order to ground this study in context which has enabled further analysis. Secondly, the chapter addressed to neophytes of Chan practice is examined in order to ascertain key features of the practice of the text. Lastly, instructions addressed to advanced practitioners is discussed, particular around Yuanlai’s conception of “Chan Diseases.” Information from these sections has led to the conclusion that Yuanlai’s huatou practice in the Chan Jingyu is primarily concerned with reinforcing ideals of orthodox Chan practice which persisted during the late Ming.
