Abstract 旅美華嚴學者張澄基(Garma C. C. Chang)在其《全體性佛學華嚴哲學》(The Buddhist Teaching of Totality The Philosophy of Hwa Ten Buddhism, 1971)一書中序言指出,唯有華嚴佛學是一全體機體哲學(a philosophy of totalistic organism),近乎懷德海(A. N. Whitehead)的「機體哲學」(philosophy of organism)。其後美國華嚴學者奧丁(Steve Odin)在其《歷程形上學和華嚴佛學》(Process Metaphysics and Hua-Yen Buddhism, 1982)一書中延續發展此觀點,指出華嚴佛學與懷德海同樣具備「圓融無礙」(syncretic harmonization)的形上思維模式,其要旨即「理事無礙」(the unhindered interpenetration between universal with particular)和「事事無礙」(the unhindered interpenetration between particular with particular)。約此同時,當代中國哲學家方東美與程石泉也抱持相似觀點,認為華嚴佛學與懷德海機體哲學頗有相通之處。在其〈懷德海自然哲學中「事」與「相」〉一文中,程石泉指出懷德海所言「事」(event)頗近乎華嚴宗所談之「事法界」,所言「相」(object)則近乎華嚴宗所談「理法界」中之「名相」。緣此,本文擬就華嚴初祖杜順和尚「華嚴法界觀」所言「三觀四法界」與懷德海《歷程與真際》(Process and Reality)一書中所言「永恆對象」(eternal objects)(「理」)和「現行實有」(actual entities)(「事」)做一比較,以闡發華嚴佛學中的機體形上思想和懷德海哲學中的華嚴元素。
