| Abstract | The Daizo Mushi-barai Mokuroku (大蔵虫払目録) is a catalog of the book collection of the Nishi Hongwanji School in early modern Japan, build for checking the books during the annual airing . This catalog gives a good picture of the state of the schoolʼs archive but has not been well studied till now.
Under the name of this catalog, three types of records remain to this day: Daizo Mushi-barai Mokuroku A, Daizo Mushi-barai Mokuroku B, and SHoku Daizo Mushi -barai Mokuroku. They were used for a long period from the Bunsei period (1818-1830) to around the 9th year of Meiji.
The Daizo Mushi-barai Mokuroku derives from the ideas of Chidō (智洞), who was disgraced and died in prison because of the Sangou Wakuran (龍谷学黌内典現存目録). The Daizo Mushi-barai Mokuroku inherits the unique arrangement of books in the storeroom of the Nishi Hongwanji School, it can be said that the School collection was under the influence of Chido’s philosophy until the Meiji era.
The Daizo Mushi-barai Mokuroku also includes long incipits of the books, allowing easy reference. This catalog could be used as a research tool for studies at that time.
It is expected that a more detailed study if these catalogs will provide further insight into the state of the archives, as well as to the understanding of the book culture of the time.
