AbstractA huge number of Buddhist manuscripts and traditional blockprint editions have survived not only in Asia but also in such Western countries as France, Germany, the United Kingdom, Russia, and the United States of America. The public institutions or private persons in their possession have published numerous catalogues and/or various bibliographical materials dedicated to their collections. Getting the full picture of the entire extent of the bibliographical sources remains, however, a daunting task.
I hope this contribution will offer some assistance in this direction by providing an overview of the collections of Buddhist manuscripts and blockprint editions kept in Russia, where materials in Oriental languages have been collected since the early 18th century. The paper gives relevant information on the catalogues and basic bibliographical tools necessary for
making effective use of these collections. Further details are provided in those cases when there is something noteworthy about a particular collection, collector, or catalogue editor.
This survey covers the collections in the possession of the following Russian institutions:
1. Institute of Oriental Manuscripts of the Russian Academy of Sciences, St. Petersburg
2. National Library of Russia, St. Petersburg
3. St. Petersburg State University Library, St. Petersburg
4. Hermitage Museum, St. Petersburg
5. State Museum of the History of Religion, St. Petersburg
6. Institute for Mongolian, Buddhist and Tibetan Studies, Siberian Branch of Russian Academy of Sciences, Ulan-Ude
7. Kalmyk Scientific Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Elista
8. State Archive of the Republic of Tatarstan, Kazan
9. National Museum of the Republic of Tuva, Kyzyl
Buddhist manuscripts and blockprint editions are also found in collections held by institutions in neighboring countries which were once part of Tsarist Russia and the Soviet Union. In this paper, I survey the following collections:
10.1. Vilnius University Library, Vilnius, Lithuania
10.2. M. K. Čiurlionis National Museum of Art, Kaunas, Lithuania
10.3 Municipal O. V. Bleshchunov Museum of Private Collections, Odessa, Ukraine
The bibliographical works quoted in this paper are based on version 3.0 of my Bibliographical Sources for Buddhist Studies: from the Viewpoint of Buddhist Philology to be released in April 2022.
