The doctrine of twelvefold dependent origination (dependent arising) and karma forms the core of Buddhist causality. The twelvefold dependent origination delineates the process of sentient beings' birth, death, and rebirth, while karma explains the causal relationship within this process. By delving into these concepts, we gain a deeper understanding of how individual actions produce corresponding results, and that liberation can be attained by eradicating ignorance and purifying karma. The twelvefold dependent origination is a sequence: "Ignorance conditions formations, formations condition consciousness, consciousness conditions name-and-form, name-and-form condition the six senses, the six senses condition contact, contact conditions feeling, feeling conditions craving, craving conditions grasping, grasping conditions becoming, becoming conditions birth, birth conditions aging and death." This sequence describes the cycle from ignorance to the creation of karma and subsequent rebirth. Karma refers to the actions of body, speech, and mind, and the resulting good or bad consequences. It does not produce immediate results but ripens when conditions are met. Karma accumulates with each action, and a single action can produce multiple results, the severity of which depends on the force of the action. Each link in the twelvefold dependent origination is intertwined with karma. Ignorance serves as the root of karma: due to ignorance of reality, beings generate negative karma. Formations involve the creation of karma: the actions of body, speech, and mind constitute karma. Consciousness carries karma: past karma determines one's current experiences. Subsequent links demonstrate the operation of karma: from name-and-form to aging and death, all are the results of ripening karma. Therefore, practitioners need to cultivate wisdom and compassion through spiritual practice, gradually eliminating afflictions and ultimately attaining Nirvana. In this regard, the relationship between the Twelve Links of Dependent Origination and karma reveals the cycle of life and emphasizes the importance of individual actions. Additionally, through the teachings of Buddhism's transcendental methods, applied to modern education on life and death, we can accept death as a natural process. Not only can karma be transformed through practice, thereby influencing the form of life in the next existence, but the ultimate goal of practice is to transcend life and death, leading to the liberation of Nirvana.
