“The mind is like a skilled painter, who creates various forms made up of the five components. Thus of all the phenomena throughout the entire world, there is not a single one that is not created by the mind.” ──The Avatamsaka Sutra Venerable Master Hsing Yun once explained this Sutra in The Merit Times. He believes that the mind has infinite creativity and can paint anything in the world, birds, beasts, fish, insects, and emotions like joy, anger, sorrow, and happiness. He said: "The mind is omnipotent, and it can manifest whatever it wants. Therefore, " the three realms are only in the mind; the myriad dharmas are only in the consciousness " All myriad dharmas are created by the mind alone, no mind no myriad dharmas. So, mind thought is crucial to a person. During the Eastern Han Dynasty, Buddhism first came to China, and blended with the Confucian and Taoist philosophy, then developed into unique Chinese Buddhism. During the prosperous periods of Sui and Tang Dynasties, Buddhism became one of the lifestyles of many nobles, scholars, and literati. Many well-known literati and artists integrated Buddhism into their lives and creations. For example, Su Dong Po and Huang Ting Jian in Song Dynasty, Great Masters Hongyi, Feng Zikai, Zhang Dai-Chien, Qi Bai-Shi, etc. in Modern times, were deeply influenced by Buddhism, and created eternal art works. Their outstanding artistic accomplishments show that the practice of Dharma not only achieve inner mind peace, but also develop awareness through the transformation of daily life through Dharma, create a high-level spiritual world and inspire incredible creativity. The idea of this thesis is that changing one’s mind through Buddhism is the driving force of creation. Through handwriting the scriptures and the creative works of daily thoughts and feelings, we confirm the daily insights with the Dharma and make one's own life spectacular. While I was writing this paper the world was suffering from the Coronavirus pandemic where many activities and communications were forced to stop. Like a traditional war, the war against the Coronavirus has negatively impacted many aspects of our social, spiritual, economic way of life, even to this day. As a result of these unprecedented times I deeply realize the preciousness of practicing Buddhism as an artistic outlet that enhances my creativity which, in turn, better equips my ability to cope with the emotions and pressures of the pandemic. The melding of Buddhism and art have been the mark of growth in my life during these most trying times. |
