抄録 | The present article focuses, by means of a descriptive analysis, on the beliefs in "The Seven Worlds Presently Remaining (Ch'i-shih hsien-ts'un)" and "Imperial Worship (Huang-ti ch'ung-pai)" which often appear in the inscriptions on stele from the Northern and Southern Dynasties (386 -- 589). It can be shown that:
(1) The belief in imperial worship in the Northern Wei (386 -- 535) accompanied that of the nature and spread of Buddhism from "Yuen-kang to Lung-men to free-standing statuary." This took place in the move of the imperial capitals from P'ing-ch'eng to Lo-yang.
(2) The "Unification of Two Bodies (Er-t'i ju-i)" involving the "Cultivation of the Sage Bodhi (Sheng-chueeh chiao-hua)" from the Buddhist point of view and the "Kindness and Charity of the Sage Emperor (Sheng-huang te-tse)" from the imperial point of view was a primary factor which directly led to and produced a belief in worshipping statuary during the Northern Wei. At the same time, contemporary disciples of Buddhist beliefs, with regards to the emperor, also played a direct and positive role in its spread.
(3) The term "Seven Worlds" did not originate in China proper, but in the traditional customs of India. However, after being introduced into China proper from Liang-chou,the term was later to become widely used and popular under the Northern Wei. A factor in the significance of "Seven Worlds" was actually its suitability in nature to being manifested and developed. The Way of Filial Piety and View of Ethics found in traditional ancient China were terms able to respond to and complement the significance of the Seven Worlds. |
