抄録 | This paper discusses Buddhism from the perspective of mental health. The overall humanistic approach of Buddhism has clear relevance to psychological health and well-being. This takes two forms - therapy for psychological problems, and the prevention of psychological disorders. The latter also includes the promotion of positive psychological health. Several techniques and strategies from the Buddhist texts are cited and are discussed in relation to therapy and prevention. Some of the key concepts in Buddhism which are relevant to these areas are also considered in some detail, with reference to textual material. It is argued that Buddhism has the potential to make a major contribution to mental health in today’s world. |
