Humanistic Buddhism, which propagates the Buddha’s teachings as a method of cultivation, settles mental confusion and cares for society. It is an important method for those living in a diversified and ever-changing society, helping them to cope and adapt physically, mentally and spiritually. Its substantial successes can be attributed to the features of Humanistic Buddhism known as “life care” and “humanities therapy.” In his written work and speeches, Venerable Master Hsing Yun has often emphasized that Humanistic Buddhism’s foundation is simply humanity itself. By working on self-awakening and the awakening of others, one can accordingly bring about social stability. Thus, through the effects of calmabiding on individuals and society, one can show or justify the practical meaning and benefits of Humanistic Buddhism.
This paper provides an analytical discussion of how Venerable Master Hsing Yun teaches and guides the general public on issues related to the self-pacification of body and mind. This paper will also illustrate Venerable Master Hsing Yun’s approach to Loving Kindness, Compassion, Joy and Equanimity, as well as reveal the spirit of life care and the efficacy of humanities therapy found in Humanistic Buddhism.
