The modern and secular context presented in modern social imaginaries does not only include individualistic lifestyles and instrumental rationality. Considering the unique characteristics of European society throughout its historical transformation, we can see that human welfare and transcendental understanding in Western society is a reflection of Christianity’s influence. Taylor’s writings were focused on this analysis. Correspondingly, Buddhism, especially Humanistic Buddhism, can provide an ideological and practical model to resolve the limitations of modern Western social imaginaries. In view of this, Humanistic Buddhism not only meets the general definition of religion since the Axial Age, but also incorporates modern social imaginaries, and completes the structural setting of modern society with its rich teachings that transcend self and time.
