試論大馬中文平面媒體佛教版編輯風格之演變—以南洋商報登彼岸版為例=‘On the Evolution of the Edition of Buddhist Columns of Chinese Print Media in Malaysia’ – A Case Study of ‘Deng Bi-An’ in Nanyang Siang Pau

The Buddhist column in Nanyang Siang Pau, which is entitled as ‘Ci Hang’ bythe Venerable Master Chok Mor, is originated in 4th August 1992. The householder,Mr. Chan He-Jin, was the first editor of this column. At that time, the main part ofthe column, which is called ‘Ling Hang’, was mainly focus on exclusive interviews aswell as introducing Buddhist temples and Buddhist events. Also, some of the articles were contributed by the specific columnists and the public. Besides that, the column answers to reader’s letters. In 1994, the former editor was replaced by Mr. Ang Gu.The customary style basically remained the same, besides which the editor often adding up his own drawing according the content of the articles, which expresses some kind of aesthetic vision. In 1997, Mr. Lai Kah-Heong took over Mr. Ang’s editorial role. The customary style of the column from 1997 to 2002 basicallyremained the same. In the second half of 2002, the subject matter began to present byway of issue discussion. In 2003, the column started to launch more regular issues. Inaddition to the general topic of Buddhism, the range of discussion in this column wasalso associated with the issues of civil society and the issues of current events happening in our society. After attending a meditation retreat organized by the Vietnamese Zen Master Thich Nhat Hannh, he knows how to apply the spirit ofcompassion in Buddhism to various levels in our society. However, he often faces some of the difficulties such as the shortage of time for the issue planning, the lack of manpower and as a result the report is not written in depth. Furthermore, to prevent ‘putting the cart before the horse’, he must deliberate about how to balance between the concern of the current issue and the intensity of religious practice in such areligious column.
