As humanistic thoughts leap to dominate the mainstream of education, Philosophy of Zen Buddhism, which having been valuing life comprehension, shouldn’t stay ignored. Comprised of a set of complete and concrete methodology, its Five Branches and Seven Sects should be broadly explored and applied with good reasons. This thesis is meant to base the current humanistic education on the instructive modes of Zen’s Five Branches and Seven Sects, with a simultaneous look into how their developments are related to their educational styles. The investigation begins with the history of Zen, with reference to the nature of "finding thy true self" in Zen’s Five Branches and Seven Sects, followed by the main topic—inquiring into how they make use of various techniques to instruct pupils and to have them enlightened so as to see their inner selves and realize the ultimate meaning and eternal value of life. This thesis is divided into six chapters. Chapter One: "Introduction", Chapter Two: "Origins of Five Branches and Seven Sects," a narration of the heritage from Do Mo to Liu Zu, Chapter Three: "Heritage of Five Branches and Seven Sects", a description of Liu Zu going down to the creators of its various branches, Chapter Four: "Educational styles of the Five Branches and Seven Sects,” Chapter Five: "Educational features of Five Branches and Seven Sect," and Chapter Six: "Conclusion." Hopefully the systematic, detailed investigations and depictions of its educational methodology can rouse more interests and urge more sincere attitudes toward the Five Branches and Seven Sects of Zen, further creating a new phase by blending it with modern thinking. In that case, it’s not only the fortune of Buddhism but also a great contribution to our education.
