This thesis is to analyze the pure land thought of Yin Kuan through his understanding and transmission of the teachings of Tien Tai and Hua Yen school, particularly their pure land thought and his inheritance of the thought of Pure Land School. The methodology used by me is consisted of personal role approach, philosophical approach and “to study the Buddha Dharma by means of the Buddha Dharma” approach. The dimension and focus of the research is to analyze the process and development of transmission in terms of “similarity and difference, development and transformation”, to clarify the theories based by Pure Land School as admired by Yin Kuan and understand its main value. Yin Kuan inherited the thought of Pure Land school, such as “the real existence of western pure land and the Amitābha Buddha”, “other-power and original vow, expedient way and easy path”, “to arouse Bodhicitta and recitation of the Buddha’s name with belief”. He understood the main teachings of Tien Tai school, such as “practice in daily life”, “sudden enlightenment by theory, realization by gradual practice ”, “non-duality of samsara and nirvana”, “to practice in the pure land where the sage and mortal dwelling together”. He incorporated the pure land thought of Hua Yen school, such as “Samantabhadra’s practice and vow leading to Sukhāvatī”, “the supremacy to be reborn to Sukhāvatī”, “the chanting of the name of Amitābha Buddha leading to the right path of bodhi”. Thereby, Yin Kuan not only understood thoroughly the teachings of Pure Land school, Tien Tai school and Hua Yen school, particularly their exposition of pure land thought., but also had outstanding explanation of expedient way of chanting the name of Amitābha Buddha. The pure land thought of the Pure Land school are founded on the pure land thought of other-power and original vow as proposed by “ three sutras and one sastra”, mainly pursue to be reborn in the pure land by other-power. Monk Tan Luan clearly propounded the chanting of the name of Amitābha Buddha, so that one can be reborn to the pure land and reside in the status of “non-returning”. Monk Tao Chou and Monk Shan Dao inherited his idea and proposed to extinguish one’s Karma by confession and recite the name of the Buddha one-mindedly as the cause of rebirth. . Under the background of time and space as well as the inheritance and transmission of various Dharma masters, the conditions to be reborn to the pure land of the Pure Land school developed and came upon Yin Kuan, the thirteen Dharma master of Pure Land school. Yin Kuan expounded the thought of Pure Land school and protected other Buddhist schools secretly.
