“Dying Assist Chanting” is a respond of Buddhists who faced the ultimate issue of death. For Buddhists of “Pureland ”, the dying person may reborn in the “Western Pureland” by assist chanting. However, the scientific research, whether Assist Chanting rite could lead the dying person to the other world or not, have no answer till now. This research tries to escape the positivism method to solve the problem of Humanistic Care but rather using “Life Recognition Process” to analyze the function of the Dying Assist Chanting. We argue the rite partner’s “Life Recognition” is changed by Dying Assist Chanting rite which changes the symbolic meanings of “space” and “time”. Finally the social relation and norms are built up. These are the functions and meanings of the Dying Assist Chanting to the death under groups or social context. The analysis of rite of sign and symbol is the method of this research, which base on the transition of “time and space” within rite. It also adopts the theory of Phenomenology as base of Epistemology. We would like to mediate the gap between religion and none-religion to reach a coincide platform. Based on the research of “Dying Assist Chanting”, we found that different methodology and Epistemology between different research groups had narrowing the academic vision, even monopolize the academic market in this issue. Thus, each says their word to the death phenomena without agreed result. This research try to define the rite of Dying Assist Chanting as a process which make a life recognition change by sign and symbol change under social context. Per Vimalakīrtinirdeśa-sūtra(維摩詰經), “The heart purified thus the Buddha’s land purified”, indeed the “Pureland itself is in rite”.
