星雲大師《在人間自在修行—八識講話》的人間佛教修行觀之探究=An Analysis of Venerable Master Hsing Yun’s “Carefree Living: A Commentary on the Eight Consciousnesses” Investigating the Cultivation Practice of Humanistic Buddhism
星雲大師=Venerable Master Hsing Yun; 《八識講話》=Carefree Living: A Commentary on the Eight Consciousnesses; 《八識規矩頌》=Verses on the Structure of the Eight Consciousnesses; 唯識思想=Doctrine of Consciousness-Only; 萬法唯識=Consciousness-Only; 人間佛教修行=Cultivation Practice of Humanistic Buddhism
The main purpose of this research paper is to understand how Yogācāra thinking is interpreted in contemporary Humanistic Buddhism based on Venerable Master Hsing Yun’s Carefree Living: A Commentary on the Eight Consciousnesses. The multitude of Buddhist sutras and treatises that deal with the mind teach us the way to observe, cure, and purify our minds. As stated in the Lankāvatāra-sūtra, “The dharma that is taught by the Buddha is to cure our afflicted minds. Without our afflicted minds, there is no need for the Buddha’s teaching.” Based on this concept, putting Buddhism into practice is the main point that will be focused in this paper. Venerable Master Hsing Yun propagates Humanistic Buddhism with particular emphasis on contemplating and cultivating the mind. As all phenomena in the world arise from and are the manifestation of the mind, understanding the relationship between mind, body and all dharmas is the critical starting point for cultivation. In order to explain the characteristics and contemporary significance of consciousness-only as explained in Venerable Master Hsing Yun's works, this paper first compares the theoretical analysis on Thirty Verses on the Vijñapti-mātra Treatise and Verses on the Structure of the Eight Consciousnesses, to advance the understanding of its practice in Humanistic Buddhism.
