The Buddhist catalogue is an important material used in Chinese Buddhist literature studies. The research object of this thesis is the Zhongjing mulu (abbreviated as Fajing lu). This catalogue is the first Shih''s catalogue of the Sui Dynasty after the reunification of both the Northern and Southern Dynasties. From the perspective of historiography, Monk Fajing et alii’s motivations and purposes of compiling this catalogue are worthy of attention, which are helpful in providing a deeper understanding of the development of Buddhism in Sui Dynasty. As far as its content is concerned, Fajing lu is an important historical material that aids in studying the Buddhist scriptures of the Sui Dynasty and previous dynasties; in term of the recorded styles, Fajing lu not only draws on the merits of Buddhist catalogue prior to it, but also displayed unprecedented meticulous classification inherited by those following it. This thesis mainly utilizes the research methods of literary version, text comparison and other methods. It is divided into two parts: research and proofread. In first part, the arrangement of the thesis’ contents is as follows: The second chapter explores the background of Fajing lu by historical review. The third chapter examines how Fajing lu was recorded in both successive Buddhist catalogues and the editions of the Buddhist canon, which then further analyzes the reasons for the differences. The fourth chapter of the thesis discusses the content of Fajing lu, explores its system, and organizes relevant materials such as translators and suspected scriptures. The fifth chapter studies the relationship between Fajing lu and other Buddhist catalogues, including the comparison with Chu sanzang jiji, and also investigates the varying doubts displayed in the various books of Zhongjing mulu. The second part of the thesis presents the result of proofreading and the notes to the readers.
