Master Yinshun’s (印順,1906-2005) concept of 「Humanity-Buddhism」 (人間佛教) is the current developing route in contemporary Chinese Buddhism that is not only a systematic theory that profoundly exemplifies the religion’s fundamental spirit, but also points out an alternative method of cultivation for the modern-day monastic and lay followers—especially influential in Taiwan. This thesis is written based upon Tainan’s Miao Hsin Temple (臺南妙心寺), a Buddhist temple situated in the southern region of Taiwan that sincerely practices and enforces the teachings of Master Yinshun’s (印順) concept of 「Humanity-Buddhism 」 (人間佛教) as the foundation in all activities and cultivation exercises. This study will examine how this sixty-year old local temple has come to accept and propagate the spirit of「Humanity-Buddhism 」 (人間佛教) in its daily activities and illustrate the possible future development and expansion it holds to become an influential trend in the Buddhist world. The dissertation proceeds cross-comparisons, analysis, and overall investigations of the temple’s establishment and development through folk inquisitions and cultural heritage data analysis. Great emphasizes is placed on how the thought and concept of Master Yin Shun (印順) has been preached and how the essence of the concept has been implemented after 「Shih Chuan Tao 」(釋傳道) became the forth abbot of the temple. Master Chuan Tao has developed and regulated the practicing standard at 「Miao Hsin Temple 」(妙心寺) as well as established 「a concern for and purification of this time, this place and this person 」which adheres to the notion of 「to adorn the land to be magnificent, and to mature myriad living beings 」(莊嚴國土 ,成熟眾生) . This paper also investigates the criticism and doubt that the academic and educational circles have towards the original founding-abbot Master Hsin Chueh’s(心覺) personality and careers as well as the current abbot, Master Chuan Tao (釋傳道) and his forty years of preaching experience. The Miao Hsin Temple’s unique features and method of propagation can be summarized into five main categories: (1) The temple faithful abides to Master 「Yin Shun’s 」(印順) critique-based attitude and therefore, is able to confront and deal with many socially controversial current affairs. (2) From a Buddhist standpoint, Master Chuan Tao is able to preach and resolve many controversial social issues in a satisfactory manner that concurs with modern conceptions. (3) The temple’s activities and cultivation methods are creative, abundant and diverse—suiting and catering to the various strata of people in society; they also show great prospective features that will ensure a positive future. (4) The temple’s activities are flexible and will adjust according to the need of the current era, environment and/or practitioner. (5) The temple constantly maintains a friendly relationship with other religious groups and unreservedly cooperates with them, in order to benefit society and mankind. It is evident that the style and method preached and enforced by Master Chuan Tao (釋傳道) at the Miao Shin Temple, not only is unique and phenomenal because of its modern and flexible features, but also because of its potential nature to develop and expand into a global trend in the near future.
