This thesis consists of an annotated English translation of the Vedanā-saṃyukta (Connected Discourses of Feeling Tones, SĀ 466–489) of the complete Chinese translation of the Saṃyukta-āgama (T 99), stemming from a Mūlasarvāstivāda reciter lineage. It takes up a number of textual issues and challenges encountered in the process of translating and studying this early Buddhist textual material. Existing scholarship includes partial translations of the Chinese Vedanā-saṃyukta, comparative studies of selected Chinese-Pāli materials, and studies of mātṛkās in the Vastusaṃgrahaṇī section of the Yogācārabhūmi (T 1579; D 4039/P 5540). This thesis studies the Vedanā-saṃyukta together with its Pāli discourse parallels, corresponding Sanskrit fragments, discourse quotations in the Abhidharmakośopāyikā-ṭīkā (D 4094/P 5595), discourse quotation in the Viniścayasaṃgrahaṇī section of the Yogācārabhūmi, and canonical citations taken up in the Abhidharma works. Based on the application of three-tier model for the identification of parallels (Bhikkhu Anālayo 2008) and on literary analysis according to the waxing syllables principle (Allon 1997), this comparative study suggests a revision of a number of the earlier identifications and rankings of parallels, and it tentatively highlights some of the literary features of the likely underlying Indic text. The Chinese texts are not critically established, but they are given in modern punctuation to improve readability.
