The purpose of this study is to explore the influence of Zen meditation on the awareness of counseling psychologists for counter transference in their practical work. It includes the impact of Zen meditation on the awareness of counseling psychologists for their living experience and their awareness for counter transference in the counseling process. Using the qualitative research method, the paper conducted in-depth interviews with three counseling psychologists at the age of 35-60 with the license of counseling psychologist, who have practiced for more than three years and have at least three-year experience in Zen meditation. After the interviews, the verbatim transcription was analyzed in details. The study result is as follows: How does Zen meditation influence the awareness of counseling psychologists for their own living experience? It can be divided into awareness in Zen meditation, cognition and comprehension of Buddhist doctrine, change in self-integration after Zen meditation, and key factor of conversion. During Zen meditation, through the key factors of conversion, the awareness of physical and psychological contents and ideas arising together with the cognition and comprehension of Buddhist doctrine generated: 1) more agile, meticulous and profound awareness; 2) better self-integration. The key factors are incremental accumulative process and guidance of teacher. The effect of Zen meditation on awareness is primarily manifested in steady and dedicated listening skill, clear-mindedness and objectivity, and relaxation, as well as the open-mindedness towards dualist phenomena and subtle awareness. Hence in the counseling process, an even and multi-dimensional observation is created. Moreover, Zen meditation trains the habit of automatic awareness to observe the phenomenon of counter transference. This study also discussed the difference in such observation by means of professional trainings and experience in Zen meditation. The three research participants could further manage counter transference due to their awareness of the contents in counter transference. In terms of counter transference awareness, the results include: awareness of counter transference feelings, perception of source of issues, as well as transference and counter transference in individual relationship. In terms of counter transference management, the results include confronting counter transference, restraining counter transference and deep compassion. In addition, this study conducted a comprehensive discussion on the result and proposed specific suggestions as the reference for counseling researches and practices in the future.
