This study is aimed to explore the common points and differences of the environmental thoughts and environmental practices between Roman Catholicism in Taiwan and Tzu-chi Buddhism organization. After the literature study and in-depth interviews in this study, this study concludes the following points: First, both parties stress the importance of “Kejifuli” and the process of purifying people’s minds, to correct the desires in life and care the improvement of the soul and the purification of our environment. Second, the criteria from both parties include resource recovery, waste reduction and no using of disposable chopsticks. Thus, for the purpose of treasuring natural resources and protecting the environment , both parties argue that people should redefine the appropriate consumption in life, and discipline people’s behaviors. As for the differences between both parties, this study argues the main differences result from the causality between human and natural resources. Tzu-chi Buddhism organization stresses the “karma” in the nature and the brotherhood of species . Thus, there is no high and low between human and nature, but with the relationship of mutually dependence. On the contrary, Roman Catholicism in Taiwan argue the responsibility of human equipped by God, and people conduct the role of manager of the nature for God. The processes of putting environmental thoughts into practice have demonstrated the differences, with Tzu-chi Buddhism organization stressing “Engaged” and Roman Catholicism in Taiwan arguing the mentality kind of “out of world”. As far as the efficiency, the Tzu-chi Buddhism organization has illustrated the efficiency and speed like enterprise, faster than Roman Catholicism in Taiwan. This study suggests both parties to integrate the resources of society into volunteers system, fulfilling the value chain of environmental life and regarding industry. Meantime, both parties should convert the resources in existing educational system into the environment of other child deprived of education, to build up the next healthy generation .
