Background and Purpose: Emotional stability and mental relaxation are goals pursued by modern individuals. Singing bowl meditation have been proven to psychologically help alleviate anxiety and promote happiness, while also physiologically balancing the autonomic nervous system and stabilizing blood pressure. The aim of this study was to explore the effects of self-administered singing bowl meditation on individual self-healing ability, happiness, and flow experience.
Materials and Methods: This study employed a parallel-group design. Participants aged 20 to 64 were recruited, and those who met the criteria were randomly assigned to either the experimental group or the control group, with 30 individuals in each. The experimental group performed a self-administered singing bowl intervention by striking the bowl for 20 minutes at home every night before bedtime for three consecutive weeks, while the control group listened to a pre-recorded singing bowl audio file every night before bedtime for three consecutive weeks. The assessment tools included the self-healing ability, happiness, and flow experience questionnaire surveys.
Results: A total of 60 participants completed the experiment, with 49 females, accounting for 81.7% of the total. Both groups showed homogeneity in demographic variables and pre-test scores. Paired-sample t-tests revealed that within-group changes in self-healing ability were statistically significant for the experimental group in all parameters including the total scores, "Mindfulness," "Compassion," "Stability," and "Awareness" (p < 0.05). In contrast, in the control group, significant differences (p < 0.05) were only found in the total scores, "Mindfulness" and "Awareness" parameters. In terms of happiness, the experimental group showed significant differences in all parameters including the total scores, "Life Satisfaction," "Self-affirmation," "Self-confidence," and "Subjective Well-being" (p < 0.05), while the control group's post-test scores increased but did not reach significant differences. Independent-sample t-tests for between-group post-test differences showed significant differences in the total scores of self-healing ability and happiness (p < 0.05), with higher average values in the experimental group. Significant differences were also found in the total scores of post-test flow experience and the “Challenge and Skill Balance”, “Body-mind Integration”, “Clear Goals”, “Immediate Feedback”, “Complete Control”, “Total Concentration”, “Complete Selflessness”, “Change in Time Sense”, and “Self-reward” parameters (p < 0.05), with higher average values in the experimental group. Pearson correlation analysis of post-test scores showed significant positive correlations between self-healing ability, happiness, and flow experience.
Conclusion: The results of this study indicate that self-administered singing bowl meditation contribute to enhancing individual self-healing ability and overall happiness. Compared to listening to singing bowl recordings, self-administered singing bowl meditation also lead to better flow experie
