On the 40th anniversary of the Buddhist Tzu Chi Foundation in 2006, Dharma Master Cheng Yen, the organization’s founder, proposed establishing a lay monastic system of “pure practitioners” at the organization’s spiritual abode, the Jing Si Abode in Hualien, Taiwan. This thesis explores the spiritual cultivation methods and practices of these pure practitioners and utilizes participant observation and in-depth interviews as its research methods, using the analysis paradigm of narrative inquiry. The thesis finds that the pure practitioners at the Jing Si Abode are resolute in relinquishing family ties and are deeply committed to their chosen path, fully dedicating themselves to the mission to work "for Buddha’s teachings and for sentient beings." Through the continuous cultivation of mindful awareness and self-reflection, these lay monastics willingly make necessary adjustments and embrace self-development, which fuels their motivation to overcome challenges and adversities.
