Analects of Eminent Monks was compiled by Shih Hui-chiao of the Liang Dynasty. It would not be an overstatement to say that this book was the forerunner of the biographics of eminent monks in Chinese history. As regards to its value, not only did it have substantial contribution in the preservation of Buddhist historical materials, it also had far reaching influence on Chinese Buddhist thought. However, not many had noticed that this book also maintained part of valuable historical literary materials. Scholars who had noted the existence of these materials mentioned this fact in their books such as did Chen Yin-k'o in Mr. Chen Yin-k'o's Collection of Treatises, Chen Yuan-an in An Outline of Chinese Buddhist Historical Works, Liang Ch'i-ch'ao in History of Research on Chinese Buddhism, and Hu-shih in Literary History in Plain Chinese. This present writer noted the comments of these scholars, started a new to search, edit, review, clarify, analyse and collate the historical literary materials in this book. The intention here is not to carry out a study, but to record the materials. These materials may serve as the resources for scholars to research and work on,and from reading them, the value and influence this book has on the development of Chinese literature may be discerned.
