『디빠왕사(Dīpavaṃsa)』와 『마하왕사(Mahāvaṃsa)』 비교연구 -- ‘서시’와 ‘붓다의 깨달음’을 중심으로=A Comparative Study between Dīpavaṃsa and Mahāvaṃsa: Introductory and Buddha’s Awakening Verses

논자는 테라와다 전통의 대표적인 두 연대기인 『디빠왕사(Dīpavaṃsa)』와 『마하왕사(Mahāvaṃsa)』를 비교분석했다. 전자는 현존하는 연대기들 중 가장 오래된 텍스트로서 상대적으로 후대의 가필이나 수정작업의 영향을 적게 받았으며 초기 테라와다 역사에 대한 원초적인 사료를 제공해준다. 후자는 이전 연대기들을 보완한 것으로서 완성된 연대기의 전형으로 그 가치를 인정받아왔다. 논자는 이들 간의 비교분석을 통해 두 연대기의 유사점과 차이점을 확인하고, 그 안에서 발견되는 해석학적 함의를 살펴봄으로써 초기 테라와다 전통의 종교적 역동성을 밝히고자 한다. 본 논문은 위와 같은 궁극적인 방향성 속에서 먼저 두 연대기의 제1장에 수록된 ‘서시’와 ‘붓다의 깨달음’을 비교분석했다. 그 결과를 정리해보면 다음과 같다. 먼저 『디빠왕사』는 거칠고 정돈되지 않은 표현방식으로 연대기를 서술한다. 그럼에도 그 안에는 붓다의 가르침이 인도본토로부터 전해져왔음을 상세히 언급하고 있다. 또한 붓다의 내러티브 속에 후대의 아비담마 전문용어들을 삽입시킴으로써, 자신이 고수하는 테라와다 전통의 정통성을 역설하고 있다. 반면, 『마하왕사』는 형식과 내용면에서 모두 『디빠왕사』에 비해 높은 완성도를 보이고 있다. 서시를 통해 이전 연대기들의 단점들을 보완했음을 스스로 밝히고 있으며, 더 나아가 사까무니 이전의 24붓다들의 계보를 소개하여 붓다의 청정한 혈통이 랑까섬으로 이어지고 있음을 역설한다.
This series of articles will examine two popular chronicles, Dīpavaṃsa and Mahāvaṃsa. Through a comparative study of these two texts, I shall reveal the religious dynamics, different historical perspectives, textual characteristics and so on implicit within the text. The Dīpavaṃsa the oldest chronicle is poor in form and content, but conveys unmodified sources compare to other later chronicles such as Mahāvaṃsa. As a first article in a series, the introductory verses and narrative of the Buddha’s awakening will be scrutinized and compared as follows. Firstly, the Dīpavaṃsa describes historical events in a rough and unorganized way. It contains, however, details of the origin of the Buddha’s teachings from mainland of India. By inserting later Abhidhamma technical terms into the narratives of the Buddha, it emphasizes the legitimacy of the Theravādan tradition. On the other hand, the Mahāvaṃsa is much more developed in both form and content than the Dīpavaṃsa. The introductory verses highlight the fact that the text complements the shortcomings of the previous chronicles. Furthermore, the verses of the Buddha’s Enlightenment introduce the genealogy of the twenty-four former Buddhas to further emphasize the great lineage of the Buddha.
