Traditional Chinese medicine has a very long history. A great variety of medical recipes and treatments have been not only adopted in ancient and modern China, but also promoted to Europe and the United States. In the late eighteenth century, archeological teams discovered Dunhuang manuscripts, and there were enormous rare Chinese medical texts, which have attracted scholars’ attention in China and the West. To further facilitate research on the transfer of the medical knowledge, English translation of the Chinese medical texts, and history of medicine in imperial China, this paper proposes a framework for the development of an online Chinese English parallel corpus by (1) gathering, (2) digitising, (3) categorising, (4) transcribing, and (5) translating the excavated manuscripts from Chinese into English. This paper is divided into three main parts. The first part explains the research background and the latest development of knowledge bases of traditional Chinese medicine. The second part discusses the features and functions of the corpus with screenshots of its prototype. The last part analyses the practical applications of the corpus and follow up research directions.
