Abstract在印度傳統思想裡,慈悲喜捨四無量心是印度諸宗教間,最為美感情緒的展現,不獨為佛教所推崇,它同時是人類共感的心靈語言,更深具普世性格。在這篇短文裡,我想嘗試以要略(要說)而非廣說的筆法,討論慈悲喜捨在初期佛法之解脫道的實踐與意義,究明其如何從「佛法共外道」的世間法,轉而成為通向出世間法的橋樑。因為是要略,所以並未緊守學術的嚴謹性。在隨文援引的經典方面,我僅選取北傳的漢譯《阿含經》為主要範圍,對於既有術語則採取較寬容的詮釋空間來彰顯其實踐的活力,所以未強賦煩瑣的字源探討與本質性的意義界定。這種嘗試雖不盡容於一般學術格式,卻由衷希望對於世間的少苦、離苦有所饒益。至於內容安排上,第一節「問題之提出」說明本文論述大要;第二節以「佛教實踐的終極目的:止熄五蘊世間的煩惱」為題,逐次暗示在此目的論導向下的善法欲才能邁向出世間。第三節「出世間的善法欲:慈悲喜捨」,則以佛教觀點說明四無量心具有邁向證果解脫的意義,由世間法通向出世間法。第四節「慈悲喜捨的戒、定、慧」論述四無量心與三無漏學的涵攝關係,並略論其實踐。最後的「結語」論及慈悲喜捨能成就世間善法,亦能邁向解脫,當為世人修習多修習。
