Abstract | The article informs that the religious question in China is not limited to the contemporary tensions between the Catholic and Protestant churches and the Beijing regime, the repression suffered by Tibetan Buddhists or Uighur Muslims and the problems associated with so-called 'sectarian' movements. People's allegiance not to a single religion but to various worshipping communities within a pluralist religious system was clearly opposed to the notions of religion in use in the modern West before sociologists discovered religious modernity some decades ago. |
