Abstract

華嚴宗的五教判作為中國佛教史上一種有代表性的判教理論，歷來即頗受質疑，最主要的詬議集中於以下兩點：一是認為華嚴五教判有依仿天臺判教理論之嫌，二是指責內中大乘頓教的安立缺乏合理依據。對於此類問題，華嚴四祖清涼澄觀曾力圖予以辨析和澄清，但由於未能切中問題的關鍵，清涼大師的觀點實際上並未能為華嚴五教判提供真正強有力的理論辯護。本文即以華嚴判教之合理性問題為中心，通過對華嚴判教理論之本真意義的辨析，澄清各種常見和流行的解說中對它的誤解，進而顯明其獨特的理論價值及對於重新理解和評判大乘如來藏思想所具有的重要啟發意義。

Although the Huayan fivefold system of doctrinal classification is representative in Chinese Buddhism, questions have been raised historically. These questions are of two types. First, it is suspected that Huayan’s classification of “Five Teachings” simply imitates the Tiantai classificatory system. Second, the establishment of Mahāyāna sudden teaching is criticized as lacking a reasonable basis. Regarding these questions, fourth Huayan patriarch Chengguan attempted to provide a discussion and resolution. However, he could not get to the core of the issue, and his position was unable to provide a strong theoretical defense in support of the Huayan Five Teachings. This paper focuses on the question of the reasonableness of the Huayan system of classification through an analysis of the true meaning of the Huayan system, with the aim of clarifying various misunderstandings found in common interpretations. This will serve to show the unique theoretical value of the Huayan system, bringing a new understanding and evaluation of the innovative
significance of Mahāyāna tathāgatagarbha thought.
